Core Competencies for Injury and Violence Prevention

 

Violence and injury remain a significant burden to the health and well-being of populations.  Preventing violence or preventing injuries is a common goal, but achieving it will require a workforce trained in the principles of the discipline, with better knowledge of prevention standards, and the consistent implementation of best practices.

For the last three years, the NAICRC-STIPDA Joint Committee for Infrastructure Development has been working on defining the essential skills and knowledge necessary for successful injury and violence prevention efforts.  The joint committee has drafted a set of core competencies and related learning objectives to guide the future training of professionals in violence and injury prevention.

 

The Core Competencies for Injury and Violence Prevention are now available for comment.  This draft details 9 competencies that address fundamental components of injury and violence prevention.  These competencies and their related learning objectives were developed through the conduct of needs assessment exercises, a review of existing competencies in other disciplines, and the input of several existing professionals in the injury and violence prevention field. 

Documents Available for Review:

Three primary documents are available for review.

1. The Introduction to the Core Competencies for Injury and Violence Prevention document outlines the background to this effort and describes the process used to develop the Competencies.

2. The Core Competencies for Injury and Violence Prevention document presents the competencies and related learning objectives.

3. An  Injury and Violence Prevention Glossary defines the key terms contained within the core competency document.
